What is an urgent after hours GP appointment
An urgent after hours appointment is a telehealth consult with an Australian-registered GP overnight, between 12am and 7am your local time. It's for health issues that need prompt attention but aren't life-threatening and don't need an ambulance or a hospital.
This is not an emergency service. For chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding or any life-threatening problem, call 000. After hours doctor telehealth consults are by phone or video, and must be booked on the day.
What happens in your consult
Your GP will:
 | ask about your symptoms and when they started |
 | check your health history and any medicines you take |
 | assess whether your issue is safe to manage by telehealth |
 | give you advice on managing your symptoms overnight |
 | send a script or certificate if it's clinically appropriate |
 | tell you to call 000 or go to hospital if you need to |

Bulk billed after hours telehealth
Medicare eligibility rules apply. If your consult meets Medicare's rules, after hours telehealth can be bulk billed, and your eligibility is checked when you book. If you're not eligible, a private fee applies.
Check the booking calendar for after-hours times. Any script or certificate is issued as part of your consult, and pharmacy costs for any medicine are separate.

It's only available between 12am and 7am your local time, such as WA time in Perth or Queensland time in Brisbane, and must be booked on the day.
What can an after hours GP help with?
Urgent issues that can't wait until morning but aren't life-threatening, such as an infection with fever or pain, earache, a urinary infection, vomiting or diarrhoea, minor injuries or medicine problems.
Is this an emergency service?
No. For chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding or any life-threatening problem, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department.
Can I get a script after hours?
Yes, where it's clinically appropriate. Your eScript is sent to you by email or SMS, whichever you prefer, and you take it to a pharmacy of your choice.
Is after hours telehealth bulk billed?
Anyone can book. Medicare bulk billed if eligible. Medicare eligibility rules apply to after hours telehealth, and your eligibility is checked when you book. If you're not eligible, a private fee applies.
Can I choose my own doctor?
Yes. When you book, you can choose the doctor you'd like to see.
How long is an urgent after-hours appointment?
It's a 15-minute phone or video consult focused on your urgent issue, so your GP can assess it and advise on next steps.
