WHO IT'S FOR

People caring for a sick or injured family or household member

Your GP may need to speak with the person who's unwell

What is a carer's leave certificate?

A carer's leave certificate, also called a carer's certificate or carer's medical certificate, is evidence for your employer that you needed to care for or support an immediate family or household member who was sick, injured or affected by an unexpected emergency. Under the National Employment Standards, carer's leave usually comes out of your paid personal/carer's leave, and your employer can ask for reasonable evidence. Check your workplace's rules about the evidence it needs.

Who it's for

  • Parents caring for a sick child

  • People caring for a partner, parent or other family member who is unwell or injured

  • People caring for someone in their household

What happens in your consult

Your GP will:

  • ask about the illness or injury of the person you're caring for

  • check how much care and support they need, and for how long

  • give advice on managing symptoms and when to seek further care

  • decide whether a certificate is appropriate and what dates it covers

Your GP may need to speak with the person who's unwell. For a child, you can join the consult as their parent or carer. If your GP issues a certificate, it's sent to you by email after your consult.

Bulk billed carer's leave certificates

Medicare eligibility rules apply. If your consult meets Medicare's rules, it can be bulk billed. If you're not eligible, a private fee applies. There's no extra fee for the certificate itself. We can't help with workers' compensation claims.

FAQ

Can I get a carer's leave certificate online?

Yes. A bulkbill.doctor GP can issue a carer's leave certificate after a phone or video consult if it's clinically appropriate, and email it to you.

Is an online carer's certificate accepted by employers?

Certificates from an Australian registered doctor after a telehealth consult are generally accepted as evidence for carer's leave. Check your workplace's rules if you're unsure.

Does the person I care for need to be in the consult?

Often, yes. Your GP needs enough information to decide whether a certificate is appropriate, so they may ask to speak with the person who's unwell.

Can I get a carer's certificate for my sick child?

Yes, where clinically appropriate. Book the consult and join it with your child.

Can I get a carer's leave certificate for past days?

That's at your GP's discretion, based on what they learn in the consult.

Is a carer's leave certificate bulk billed?

Anyone can book. Medicare bulk billed if eligible. There's no extra fee for the certificate itself. If you're not eligible, a private fee applies.

Is a carer's leave certificate the same as a carer's payment form?

No. This certificate is evidence for your employer. Centrelink carer payments use their own forms and assessments.
