Mates and Mental Health: Simple Strategies for Staying Strong

October is Mental Health Month, which is a useful excuse for blokes who would rather fix a fence than talk about how they are travelling. Mates and mental health belong in the same conversation. Most men wait until sleep is wrecked, work is slipping, or someone close has already noticed. That is not weakness. It is habit. Staying strong is not pretending nothing is wrong. It is having a few simple strategies, and knowing when a mate or a GP is the next call.
Why This Month Is Worth Using
Awareness months are easy to shrug off if you feel fine most days. Mental health trouble often starts quietly. Shorter fuse. More drinks. Less sleep. Pulling back from the group chat. Waiting until you cannot get out of bed is waiting too long. Using October as a date for the chat is not drama. It is a calendar trick that works.
You do not need a TED talk. You need plain moves that DIY stops being enough.
What Staying Strong Actually Looks Like
Strength here is boring on purpose. A slightly earlier night. A walk that does not need a gym membership. Less alcohol on the nights you already know are a problem. Eating something that is not only coffee and toast. Checking in on one mate, even with a message that says nothing clever.
None of that cures depression. It does make the week more survivable while you work out what else you need. Consistency beats a dramatic Monday reboot you will abandon by Thursday.
If your head is loud, write three lines before bed: what is stressing you, what helped a bit today, and one person you could text. It is not a diary contest. It is a way of stopping the same loop from eating the whole evening.
Mates Are Part of the Plan
Blokes often open up sideways. Side by side in a car. After sport. While cooking. You do not need the perfect speech. "You have not seemed yourself" or "I am not travelling great" is enough. If a mate goes quiet, keep the door open without turning it into an interrogation.
Looking after mates and mental health is not about being everyone else's counsellor. It is noticing change, offering a practical hand, and knowing when to suggest a doctor instead of another beer. If someone talks about wanting to die, or you are worried they are in immediate danger, that is emergency territory. Call 000. Stay with them if it is safe. Do not try to carry that alone.
For everyone else, the useful bar is lower. Check in twice. Ask once more than feels comfortable. Offer to sit in on a GP booking if that helps them turn up.
When DIY Stops Being Enough
Some weeks need more than mates and habits. Low mood that will not lift. Anxiety that runs the day. Anger that scares you or the people around you. Sleep that has been broken for months. Drinking that is doing the heavy lifting. Thoughts that life is not worth it.
You do not need the right clinical label before you book. "I am not myself" is a complete sentence. Telehealth can start that conversation from home: what has changed, how long it has been going, whether work or relationships are taking the hit, and what the next step looks like. Some people need a face-to-face exam, bloods, or a mental health care plan. Starting the talk is still the useful first move.
If you have already tried to tough it out for a year, that is information, not failure. Bring it. A plan that matches your risk and your life beats another month of hoping it settles.
When a Conversation With a Doctor Helps
If mood, sleep, stress, or alcohol has changed and stayed changed, this is a reasonable month to say it. Same if a mate has pushed you to get help, or if you are worried about someone else and do not know what to advise. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis. You need a clear description of what is different.
bulkbill.doctor is an Australian telehealth GP service where Medicare bulk billing is available for eligible patients, so you can talk this through from home without adding a waiting room to an already full day.
Anyone can book. Medicare bulk billed if eligible. If it is time to talk it through, a bulk-billed telehealth appointment through bulkbill.doctor is a practical next step. Mates and mental health both get stronger when somebody names the problem — then you get on with the rest of the day.
